Recipe Ingredients
3 pints of water or stock
8oz dried split peas
1 pound ham (bacon) chopped
1 onion chopped
1 carrot chopped
1 celery stick chopped
Salt and Pepper to season
(optional)
Half a pint of Milk
½ to ¾ oz flour
Preparation and cooking instructions
Heat the water in a large pan and then add the split peas.
Simmer for half an hour and then add the chopped ham (bacon),
the chopped vegetables, salt and pepper.
Now cover and gently simmer again for about an hour to an
hour and a half or until the vegetables are tender. Then press
through a sieve or liquidise in a blender.
If you would like a creamier soup, after sieving or liquidizing
the soup return the soup to the pan and add just under half
a pint of milk and stir. Reheat the soup. Mix together the
remainder of the milk with the flour. Stirring continuously,
add this to the soup just before the soup starts to boil.
Continue to heat for a few minutes then serve.
